As we celebrate National Women Physicians Day, TeamHealth stands proudly in support of the remarkable women physicians who contribute immensely to the field of medicine. Today, we hear from Dr. Janice Rice, Staff Physician, Emergency Medicine, who shares her journey, highlighting the profound motivation behind choosing a career in medicine – a passion for aiding others in moments of crisis and making a positive impact on lives.

Choosing to make an impact

I chose a career in medicine because of my passion for helping others and making a positive impact on people’s lives. The opportunity to provide immediate care and support during medical emergencies was particularly appealing to me. Medicine allows me to constantly learn and grow, and the dynamic nature of the field keeps me motivated and engaged.

Inspiration from other women

Throughout my journey, there have been many inspiring women who have influenced my career in medicine. From trailblazing doctors who overcame gender barriers in the past to the supportive colleagues and mentors I have today, these women have shown me that it is possible to excel in a male-dominated field. Their achievements and resilience inspire me to push boundaries and strive for success. My mom always inspired me to go as far as I could with school and my career. She taught me that being self-sufficient is extremely important and for that, I’m incredibly grateful.

Persevering through challenges

Women in medicine face unique challenges. One of the major challenges is the persistent gender bias and discrimination that still exists in the profession. Women often have to work harder to prove their capabilities and are sometimes overlooked for leadership positions. Balancing work and personal life can also be challenging, especially when faced with societal expectations and traditional gender roles. Additionally, women may encounter obstacles related to pregnancy, maternity leave, and childcare responsibilities.

Motivation for other women in medicine

To women physicians and those considering a career in medicine, my message is this: Believe in yourself and your abilities. You have the power to make a difference in the lives of your patients and contribute to the field of medicine. Surround yourself with a strong support system, seek out mentors who can guide and uplift you, and never be afraid to advocate for yourself. Remember that your voice and perspective are valuable and needed in healthcare. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and continue to pursue your passion with determination and resilience.

Empowering women in healthcare

As we reflect on the inspiring journey shared by Dr. Rice and celebrate National Women Physicians Day at TeamHealth, it becomes clear that the commitment and passion of women physicians like her are driving forces in shaping the future of healthcare. Her story underscores the importance of choosing a career that aligns with one’s deepest passions and the impact it can have on the lives of others.
