We recently spoke with Michael Corvini, MD, President, TeamHealth Southeast Group, about the company culture and what it is like to work as a TeamHealth physician in the southeast U.S.
What kinds of opportunities can a physician expect at TeamHealth?
Dr. Corvini: TeamHealth is an amazing company because it is tremendously large, but it feels small like a family. I think one of the best things that we do is show a genuine interest in our clinicians and leaders and we get to know about their strengths and aspirations. We’re very good at giving them the opportunity to translate their ideas and their visions into reality. When a clinician comes to TeamHealth, they can count on us getting to know them, both personally from what they need from a work-life perspective and what their professional goals are. We will work to help them grow as leaders and be able to leverage their talents in the best way possible.
What do you enjoy most about your position at TeamHealth?
Dr. Corvini: What I enjoy most about my position with TeamHealth is the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the patients and families we serve on a large scale, but also in the lives of the people within our company on a smaller scale. In either case, the work we do is meaningful and important, and it brings me a lot of fulfillment knowing that, in the end, the goal is to make life better for the patients and also for the clinicians and leaders that serve them.
How does TeamHealth’s administrative leaders support our facility medical directors and clinicians?
Dr. Corvini: It all starts with a true dedication to the philosophy of servant leadership. At TeamHealth, we feel that there are really only two jobs. You’re either taking care of patients or you’re taking care of the people that are taking care of patients. Our administrative team works tirelessly to support our clinicians so that we can really deliver on our mission, which is to provide the highest quality of care possible for our patients and provide our clinicians with a practice environment in which they can perfect the practice of medicine.
Tell us about the team culture and dynamics at TeamHealth.
Dr. Corvini: We’re intensely dedicated to our mission. Within that, we work together in an atmosphere that’s marked by contagious enthusiasm, close collaboration and exemplary teamwork. Because of that, we love doing what we do and it all works really well.
What is one piece of advice that you would give to either a new physician graduate or a clinician considering a career at TeamHealth?
Dr. Corvini: The reality is that the modern-day practice environment is challenging, and it is likely going to continue to be challenging. I would say that having a purpose and connecting to that purpose is going to be insulating from burnout and will be really motivating from a positive standpoint. Also being a part of a company that will get to know you, care about you, recognize your talents and empowers you to make a difference is going to be very fulfilling in the long run.
How do you feel TeamHealth has supported you with your challenges or opportunities?
Dr. Corvini: TeamHealth is a tremendously large company that, at the same time, feels small, and feels like a family and is very agile. For me, or other leaders, what TeamHealth does really well is empowers us to translate our vision into a reality. When you can execute on the ideas you have, it’s tremendously fulfilling. It has been for me and I imagine it would be for anybody else.
Tell us about the community you serve and what you love most about it.
Dr. Corvini: I’m really privileged that I get to serve a tremendously diverse community that includes the patients and their families within the Southeast Group, but also our community of clinicians and leaders that serve them in areas including Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama and Louisiana. Whether I’m supporting the facility medical directors and the clinicians that render the actual care, or our leaders, I feel like I get to do meaningful work and it’s really fulfilling. Beyond the work itself, the people that I get to work with and the way we work together makes it even more fulfilling. I consider myself very privileged to be a part of this company that, in one way or another, is making life better for patients or making life better for the people that take care of those patients.
