The week of November 11-17, 2018 is a week to celebrate! Nurse practitioners are a vital segment of TeamHealth’s clinicians, and we employ some of the best nurse practitioners that I am proud to call my colleagues.
You would think arranging a marriage would not be in a nurse practitioner’s job description, but it is something I have done in my lengthy career. I was caring for a patient who had been in an automobile accident with her fiancé on their way to the courthouse to get married. He was leaving for an overseas deployment in two days, and she was quite distraught.
They had the license and just wanted to get married, bruises and all. After securing permission from the administration, the nurses and I arranged for the hospital chaplain to marry them. One of our pharmacists sang before the service, and the hospital administration had flowers in their office they donated. Our public relations team took pictures, the article was in our local paper, and the dietary team provided a cake. Side by side in wheelchairs, this couple was married with the emergency department staff and patients attending.
I have been a nurse practitioner (NP) for almost 19 years, and a registered nurse (RN) for many more. I love my job and have worked at TeamHealth for over 18 years. I cannot imagine working for any other company, as they have been supportive to all of us, from new graduate nurse practitioners to experienced clinicians.
