TeamHealth’s second Resident Leadership Retreat is in full swing, and we couldn’t be more excited! If you haven’t heard of TeamHealth’s Resident Leadership Retreat, then you have come to the right blog. TeamHealth’s Residency Relations team hosts three to four Resident Leadership Retreats (RLR) a year. The retreats are held near the beautiful Smoky Mountains in Tennessee, at the fantastic RT Lodge in Maryville.
The RLR was established in August of 2015; the Residency Relations Department wanted a better way to connect with third and fourth-year residents who have leadership goals. They were also looking for a way to give back to residents who have hectic schedules. RLRs provide a fun and productive use of these few precious days away that these residents receive. The RLRs allow residents to connect with leaders in their industry not only from a physician leadership side, but a business leadership side as well. These retreats are truly a unique training opportunity, with all expenses paid by TeamHealth, with the small exception of travel expenses for guests and their spouses.
The RLRs are hosted for emergency medicine, family medicine and internal medicine residents from all across the county. The emergency medicine retreats are hosted three times a year; family and internal medicine have one retreat a year, hosted together.
The RLR is two and a half days of interactive educational sessions featuring superb speakers who focus on the business side of medicine, and of course, fun activities in the evening. The retreat begins with a welcome reception on Monday evening and concludes with an early breakfast on Thursday morning. Classroom discussions are a crucial component of the RLRs. Typical classroom discussion includes topics like: Calculated Imbalance, Negotiations, DISC Profiling, Flow Exercise, Contracts, The First 90 Days, Managing Your Finances and more.
Obviously, we don’t want to leave the fun out of these RLRs! During each RLR, we take all the residents and guest on an excursion. This year, we are headed to Downtown Knoxville for a Wild Goose Chase Scavenger Hunt. In years past we have gone horseback riding, river tubing and even on cave tours. There is always plenty of downtime during the day and night to catch up on some sleep. We also have casino night, a chef’s challenge and s’mores by the fire pit to enjoy while residents and guests are here!
