Juneteenth is a time to reflect on a pivotal moment in American history and to recognize individuals whose leadership, perseverance, and service helped shape our nation. Their contributions spanned many fields, including healthcare, education, science, business, and public service, which continue to influence communities today.

At TeamHealth, our mission is to deliver exceptional care during life’s pivotal moments. As we commemorate Juneteenth, we honor individuals whose achievements created opportunities, strengthened communities, and left lasting legacies of service.

The stories featured below represent different experiences and accomplishments, but they share a common thread, a commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Their examples continue to inspire leadership, compassion, and service, which are values that remain essential in healthcare and beyond.

Opal Lee: Persistence in Action

Known as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” Opal Lee played a pivotal role in raising national awareness of Juneteenth and advocating for its recognition as a federal holiday. At age 89, she began a symbolic walk from Fort Worth to Washington, D.C., drawing attention to a history that had long been commemorated but not widely recognized.

Her efforts helped inspire a national movement that culminated in Juneteenth becoming a federal holiday in 2021. Ms. Lee’s story demonstrates the power of perseverance, purpose, and service, reminding us that meaningful change is often achieved one step at a time.

Rosalyn Pope: A Voice for Change

As a student at Spelman College in 1960, Rosalyn Pope authored An Appeal for Human Rights, a document that helped inspire the Atlanta Student Movement. Working alongside fellow students from institutions within the Atlanta University Center, Ms. Pope advocated for change through thoughtful dialogue, peaceful action, and civic engagement.

Her leadership demonstrated the power of education, courage, and perseverance. By using her voice to address challenges facing her community, she helped shape conversations that influenced Atlanta’s future and left a lasting impact on generations that followed.

Carrying Forward a Legacy of Service

As an OB/GYN, my career was shaped at institutions that benefitted from the influence of those like Ms. Lee and Ms. Pope. Recognizing Juneteenth helps to remind me of my purpose and privilege to care for others in their most pivotal moments. While their experiences are vastly different, Opal Lee and Rosalyn Pope each demonstrate how perseverance, leadership, and a commitment to serving others can create a lasting impact.

At TeamHealth, these same principles guide how we care for patients, support one another, and serve our communities. As we honor Juneteenth, we celebrate the enduring legacy of those who came before us and the lessons their experiences offer for the future.
