Prior to their partnership with us, the hospital, an 1,100-bed level-one trauma center in Florida, did not have an established Hospital Medicine program that provided consistent, in-house hospitalist coverage for their high patient volume, relying instead on fragmented contract coverage for inpatient services. Due to the lack of a dedicated hospitalist program, facility leadership and patients experienced dissatisfaction with performance, including long inpatient length of stay (LOS), poor documentation, excessive patient holds and more.
The hospital’s leadership engaged us as a partner in response to the success at another facility partnership in the health system. Transitioning to a full, in-house hospitalist team is no easy task. The initial needs were 33 physician hires, along with retaining a few incumbent physicians, within a 3-4 month start-up window.
Key Improvements:
- Combined length of stay (LOS) improved from 6.4 to 4.9
- Inpatient LOS improved from 6.4 to 5.8 and observation LOS improved from 2.3 to 1.5
- Case mix index (CMI) has increased from 1.3 to 1.9
- O:E trend has gone from 1.5 to 1.25
- Patient experience scores have risen to 77.5 top box scores
- Consultant utilization has dropped from an average of 4/case to 1.7/case
- Readmission rates have dropped in all categories
