PLAY: Tremendous infrastructure in emergency medicine

Improving ICU outcomes through specialized care

A 24/7 clinician presence in the ICU frees hospitalists of highly-specialized procedures and on-call coverage, and allows for more proactive care management through the timely provision of consultations, diagnostic tests, medications and procedures.

As your critical care partner, we bring a spirit of collaboration and teamwork, working with your leadership and clinical teams across other specialties and the patient’s entire care team to oversee effective treatment plans across your ICU. One way we accomplish this is through our daily multidisciplinary rounding sessions which are led by our intensivists. These team sessions include the patient’s primary bedside nurse, respiratory therapist, nutritionist, ICU pharmacist and social worker assigned to the ICU.

Under the leadership of a full-time, on-site TeamHealth facility medical director, our clinicians will actively communicate with patients and their families; assume a leadership role in your quality improvement and patient safety initiatives; and provide reporting, training, and administrative support.

TeamHealth has a tremendous infrastructure, lots of opportunity to move up the ladder both professionally and personally, lots of resources from an educational standpoint, and stability in the workplace.
Dr. Randy Katz Medical Director

Standardized, evidence-based protocols and clinical pathways promote quality and safety in patient care

As a strategy for driving quality and safety, one of our primary goals is to reduce unnecessary variations in ICU patient care. We implement standardized protocols that combine national best practices with the tailored needs of our partner hospitals.

Our ICU Solutions offers a series of standardized protocols, clinical pathways and best practices that include:

  • Blood Stream Infection Prevention Program
  • Standardized and Automated Ventilator Weaning Protocol
  • Sedation Standardization and Minimization Protocol
  • Ventilator-associated Pneumonia Prevention Protocol
  • Standardized Order Sets
  • Sepsis Early Goal-directed Therapy Protocol
  • Hypothermia Post-cardiac Arrest Protocol
  • Nutrition Now Protocol

Implementing these protocols has helped us deliver the following benefits to leading hospitals and health systems across the country:

  • Reduction in days of mechanical ventilation
  • Reduction in ALOS in ICU by 0.5 to 1.0 day
  • Improved management of pharmacy costs

Partner with us to improve the level of critical care services at your hospital

Shared commitment to clinical excellence

Your goals are our goals, so your success is our success. Collaboration, cooperation and communication are the keys. Our physicians work directly with specialists and other staff physicians to ensure collaboration around high-risk patients requiring complex care.

We partner with you to develop the core measures that are important to you, including measures from the following areas as well as core measures common to value-based purchasing and performance-based reimbursement:

  • Management/reduction in ICU bed days
  • Management/reduction in ventilator days
  • Infection rates
    • Blood and Urinary Tract Infections (CLABSI/CAUTI)
    • Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP)
  • Utilization management (pharmacy, lab, imaging)

High quality care from high caliber clinicians

We hire top-performing clinicians – specialists in critical care – and maintain a consistent expectation of clinical excellence. The on-site facility medical director leads our team and advances a patient care agenda that reflects your commitment to quality, safety, and efficiency. Our ICU specialists are on-site round the clock, and provide thorough, timely and appropriate communication and follow-up regarding each patient’s care to attending physicians, specialists and others as well as providing consults to subspecialists and surgical providers as needed.

Our physicians will participate on your trauma teams, code teams and/or rapid response teams, anchoring vital critical services for patients in acute distress while working side-by-side with nurses, respiratory therapists and others who are vital in rapid response situations.

Positive impacts on key metrics

Optimization and efficiency are critical components of our partnerships. We aim to improve your bottom line while maintaining a core focus on clinical quality, patient safety and the patient experience. For example, we can create protocols for direct admission to the ICU from the ED in order to improve ED throughput and reduce/eliminate ED diversions. Our ICU specialists can be a resource for your ED physicians to improve the level of care offered to critically ill patients and facilitate rapid transfers from other facilities to your ICU. We also proactively manage patient discharges from the ICU in order to better manage capacity.

Strategic growth partners

Working together, we identify key challenges affecting the clinical, operational and financial success of your critical care operations, and together we will identify areas for growth and strategies that will help you achieve success. We’ve worked with dozens of intensive care/critical care units across the country in hospitals of all sizes, and we will put that experience to work in tailoring a program that meets your most important quality and patient safety objectives. We can also work with you to engage our ICU clinicians in community outreach that targets other hospitals and physician groups for increased volume and program growth. We can also engage our clinicians to address unnecessary transfers from your facility, thus addressing and improving metrics related to patient retention, transfer and outmigration.
