Hospital Medicine

Hospitals are turning to the use of hospitalists—physicians focused on the general medical care of hospitalized patients—to effectively manage the increasing number of admissions. Hospital medicine programs have proven beneficial in the following areas:

  • Providing a solution for unassigned patients
  • Reducing patient lengths of stay, treatment costs and mortality rates
  • Improving overall efficiency of care
  • Enhancing quality and patient satisfaction
  • Improving clinical outcomes and the quality of medical care for hospitalized patients

Hospital medicine programs are often a natural extension of the emergency medicine program, and a number of our emergency department hospital clients have approached us to develop hospital medicine programs for them. We began providing this type of service long before the term "hospitalist" was even coined. Today we are one of the nation's leading providers of hospital medicine administrative and staffing services because we work collaboratively with each hospital to create a program that meets their overall objectives.

While recognizing the importance of accommodating each client's unique needs, we also consistently implement several key components to ensure successful hospital medicine programs. These components include:

  • Three-tiered support structure
  • On-site medical director of hospital medicine
  • Regional client services team
  • National inpatient services network
  • Hospitalist recruitment and retention
  • Primary care physician relationship building
  • Satisfaction programs
  • Electronic service capture from the bedside to the billing company
  • Productivity reports
  • Marketing to the medical staff
  • Case management
  • Continuity of care for each patient
  • Discharge planning
  • Utilization reviews
  • Readmissions tracking
  • Ancillary services follow-up
  • Communication with patients, their families and community physicians

By partnering with TeamHealth, our clients can benefit from our 27 years of experience, avoid the "pitfalls" of learning curves and share best practices with other hospitals within our network.
