TeamHealth Enhances Commitment to Compliance and Billing Practices

KNOXVILLE, Tenn., July 1, 2004 - TeamHealth, the nation's leader in clinical outsourcing services, announced two leadership changes today. Effective immediately Steve Sherlin will serve as chief compliance officer for the company. Since 2000, Sherlin has held the position of executive vice president for Health Care Financial Services (HCFS)—the company's billing and reimbursement division. Joe Carman has been named as Sherlin's successor, serving as president of HCFS. Before Sherlin's appointment, Robert Joyner, J.D., was functioning in a dual role as general counsel and chief compliance officer.

In his new role, Sherlin will be responsible for the ongoing planning, implementation and maintenance of the corporate compliance program as well as developing and communicating policies and procedures related to corporate compliance. He will continue to report directly to Lynn Massingale, MD, FACEP, president and CEO of TeamHealth, who says, "Steve is an industry veteran, is very knowledgeable of TeamHealth, and he commands a firm grasp of the issues related to healthcare billing and compliance. Bob Joyner's leadership in this area has served us very well, but growth of his other duties necessitated this change."

Assuming the role of HCFS president, Carman will be responsible for the overall performance of all billing and reimbursement efforts for TeamHealth, including oversight of billing operations support and operation of five billing centers, which are located in Alcoa, Tenn.; Akron, Ohio; Beckley, W.Va.; Livermore, Calif.; and Plantation, Fla., along with TeamHealth's National Patient Service Center in Knoxville, Tenn. He will work closely with Sherlin to ensure regulatory compliance. Additionally, Carman's responsibilities will include new business development in billing and reimbursement services.

Carman will report to Massingale, who commented on his appointment saying, "We are pleased to have Joe in this important role. He brings great leadership skills to TeamHealth and HCFS. Carman's extensive experience in healthcare billing and reimbursement lends itself well to his management of our regional billing centers that currently bill for over 6.5 million patient encounters annually."

Before coming to TeamHealth, Carman held successive positions throughout his 15 years at Per-se Technologies, one of the nation's leading physician billing companies. He most recently served as senior vice president, anesthesiology specialty organization, where he was the chief operating executive for a specialty-focused business unit for 4 million patient encounters a year.
