In June 2012, in a 5-4 vote, the Supreme Court voted that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) is in fact constitutional. The Court ruled that Congress has the power to compel individuals to purchase insurance as a tax on people who do not have health insurance. Upholding the ACA includes establishing insurance exchanges in each state, prohibiting insurance companies from discriminating against the sick, and beginning in 2014 requiring nearly all Americans to prove on their income taxes that they carry health insurance. The court, however, did strike down part of the reform law related to the mandated expansion of Medicaid. Congress had aimed to expand the insurance program for the poor by at least 16 million people, but the Court ruled that Congress did not have the power to cut off Medicaid funding for states that refused to comply with the law's eligibility rules.

TeamHealth Thanks Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam for Restoring TennCare Funding for Emergency Medical Care
During this past Tennessee legislative session, TeamHealth played an active role in advocating on behalf of emergency physicians across the state. Through join efforts by TeamHealth, the Tennessee College of Emergency Physicians (TCEP) and others, TeamHealth was successful in restoring FY'13 budget cuts that would have severely impacted the delivery of emergency care in the state.
Click here to see the communication to Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam, signed by TeamHealth's Tennessee-based physician leadership, thanking him for his support of Tennessee emergency physicians and the care provided to TennCare patients. TeamHealth would like to express our appreciation to Governor Haslam and his administration for their support of the necessary funding needed to preserve quality emergency medical care in the State of Tennessee.
